There are many different trees called "palms". If you're talking about the US Atlantic coast, you're probably thinking of the cabbage palmetto. The palmetto does well in coastal South Carolina, but its range ends around Wilmington, NC. The gulf stream swings out away from the coast when it hits Cape Fear, with the result that the climate of the coast north of Wilmington is much colder than it is south of Wilmington.

If you visit the North Carolina coast, you'll see a lot of palmettos between Cape Fear and Cape Lookout. These are all transplants, generally planted by developers trying to sell coastal properties. These trees invariably die when a cold winter comes along.
