I have a 2001 craftsman with a BS 21 HP that keeps on running year after year. I use it all winter and summer. It does duty when I take my BC named Buddy on his 2 mile trek almost every day of the year beside using it to bushhog my yard every couple of weeks. I always use synthetic oil in it. Must have several thousands of hours. Every once in a while is starts loping for a few days but always settles back down. If I had my preference I would have picked a Honda but $$$ got in the way.
