Mike, Im NOT a fan of the 8 volt system, its a band aid approach to cure a problem. If one insisted on converting to gain starting performance especially in cold weather, may as well go ahed n convert to the more standard 12 volt n be done with it......... It wont harm a generator in the short run, it may run just a tad warmer n draw a few more field amps. However, whether or not the Voltage Regulator requires adjusting depends on what kind of system you have. If its a 2 coil VR with a cutout relay and a current only control relay, she could still charge an 8 volt battery. However, if the VR has a Voltage Control Relay it may need adjusted to better charge an 8 volt battery. If it were the simple 2 wire cutout relay ONLY it should charge with no adjustments. NOTE an 8 volt battery will cause the 6 volt coil to draw a tad more amps n it can run just a bit hotter plus the points will burn up a lil sooner unless you add some ignition ballast. Likewise, 6 volt lights will burn real bright but burn up sooner. In 6 volt systems you can gain starting RPM and performance by using the biggest heaviest highest CCA rated battery that will physically fit in the comparment PLUS use 00 gauge Battery n Starter n Ground cables. Some of them only bring their noses down out of the air long enough to look down them anyway. If you are like me you are only doing this old tractor stuff because you enjoy it. You
