I have been buying Swiss cattle for the last 3 years trying to build up a herd to get back in the business. I have been to several sales that are mostly Swiss and the prices have run pretty high. I have found a dairy in northern Indiana that I purchase calves from. The herd owner is the brother in law of a guy that is likely the premier Swiss breeder today. If you look at any Swiss bloodlines today, about half of them will have the Blessing prefix. The herd I purchase from does not use AI but uses bulls from the best of Blessings cows. I have really appreciated the deal I have been given, I buy weaned calves for $600, I am allowed to pick what ever one I want from the hutches. I have had excellent luck, not lost one yet and they give me every bit of information they have on the calves I select. I attempted to purchase one of Blessings calves but they wanted $3,000 for one.
I have bought one Swiss cow, dry after her first lactation, for $1250. She has been in milk for almost 20 months now, and provided milk for the house and her now 1100 lbs steer, as well as all the calves I bring home. I put calves on milk for a month or so even if they have been weaned before purchase.
I like my holsteins but am going to go MIG and really believe the Swiss and Jerseys are grass eating milk machines.
