From what you are saying, it sounds like your tractor is starving for enough gas to do any kind of work. My 630 was acting some like that recently. The automatic shutoff under the tank had some stuff in it. After cleaning it all was well again. The clutch adjustment should be tight enough to snap into place without having to hold in, if I'm understanding you right. Your clutch should have no effect on how the tractor is running. Good Luck.
