Maybe he lives in an apartment and has never mowed grass before. Maybe he just had a brain fart. Maybe he thought that throwing the grass clippings into the stuff he hasn't cut yet was a good idea to get it mulched up more.

Heck, my brother (24 years old) and I (30 years old) have an ongoing argument on where to throw the clippings. I say onto the grass you've already cut, to save wear and tear on the mower. He says onto the uncut grass, so the clippings get mulched in the grass better. And don't even get us started as to the optimal length to let grass grow, or whether its better to cut "up and down" the field, or in a circle.

Regardless, talk to the kid if you see him doing something dumb. Maybe he'll turn out to just a moron. Or maybe he's a bright kid who just lacks a little bit of experience.
