I have a 5.4 F-150 and had an E-250 . The power is acceptable for occasional towing. The fuel mileage is around 14 mixed driving with and can be as good as 17 to as low as 11 depending on the work its doing. A LOT depends on the rear-end ratio.
As far as dependability I have had great dependability out of mine. I heard stories about some of the earlier ones but have had no problems with either of these in 150K miles.
