Main reason is good old supply and demand. When diesel wasn't 3 bucks, and twine was $18 a bale, and the hayfields were free (which they were around here, until this year), you could make a buck at $1.75. And you couldn't get any more than that, because there was plenty of $1.75 (or $1.50) hay around.
