I seen a tire one tire that had a sidewall hole ripped through the cords large enough to wiggle one's hand through.
The owner actually stitched the rip together with stainless wire intended to safety lock nuts etc with on aircraft etc.
A boot was placed on the inside of the tire and the tractor was used for years.
Miller Tire also sells a two part cold rubber patch gap/gouge/hole filler.

The Revival of a John Deere Combine - by The Red, John Fritz. For several years I had been driving by a farm house on the west side of Indianapolis that had a John Deere combine parked in high weeds in a lot behind the house. The gentleman no longer farmed because the entire area was developed with housing and light industry. I had stopped several times and knocked on the door but no one would answer.
