Inch to the foot is best. If it's a staight run, then 36 to 38 inch width with side rails is sufficient. An L shape or crisscross requires room to make the corner. A standard wheelchair goes through a 28 inch door. Make sure the top of the ramp has a nice flat spot in front of the door. I built my own lift, powered by a 110 volt winch, it beats the heck out of a ramp for 20 trips a day.
