Neither of the engines were all that bad. There were many things about engineering in the 1010/2010 series tractors in general that was not very good - but not necessarily the engines. What is it, exactly, that you seem to think is "pathetic" with 2010 diesels - as compared to other diesels built around the same time? They were kind of new ground for Deere Co. - being the first Deere diesels to use rotary injection pumps - also - I think the first full size engines to use wet-sleeves (not counting older pony motors). 2010s diesels worked pretty well when setup properly. And, when the manual primer and glow -plugs were working properly, they'd outstart many newer engines in cold weather.
