We've used mercs for years at work. All the two strokes in the last
twenty years we've had them were 50:1. The older ones specified a
richer mixture but that was based on the two stroke oils of the era
the engine was made not on how it was built. I think you can use
the 50:1 mix useing the oils made today. Buy the good stuff.
Johnson outboards used a 100;1 mix with good results except
where engines sat unused for extended periods which would allow
internal rusting. So the practice was to use a very rich mix just
before layup for the winter.
