We always have towed with our F150's - a 77, 80, 88, 89, 90, 96, 98, and now an 05. Gooseneck cattle trailer 7'x16' with 8 cows runs about 12,000 pounds - never had anything fail on any of them. Tried hauling hay with the 8'x25' flatbed (around 17k loaded) - that had the axle sitting against the frame, but pulled it home anyway (only a couple miles). So my personal opinion, if the axle isn't against the frame you're just fine. Make sure you have trailer brakes and a good working controller!
