Broken belts are almost always caused by either low tension/skidding, or by a pully sticking or even freezing. Be sure pulleys and spindles spin freely. Once once starts binding it increases the load, particularly if its a back idler (i.e. the back of the belt runs on the pulley), this breaks the fibers in the belt backwards from their normal load direction.
