The possibilities are endless. The first thing that came to mind was a "yard mule" I remember seeing at a trucking terminal one time. It was a short wheelbase truck with a powered (hydrostat) wheel on the front end to enable the truck to make extremely sharp, quick turns while jockeying trailers around in tight quarters. With a tractor that has turning brakes a simple castor wheel would allow the same turning ability. Where did you see the 5-wheeled tractor? It's location might be a clue as to what it's intended use is.
