I haven't done any scientific studies to back this up but when I was doing quite a bit of chain saw work it seemed to make a difference. I would put whatever was handy including used oil. But after I used chain oil made for that purpose I don't intend to use anything else. The chains lasted longer. If you don't use a chain saw much it won't make much difference. It seems to me that some of the impurities in used motor oil would cause wear on the chain.
