I don't know what year and trans you have. My 94 F250 diesel had a similar problem with the E40D auto-overdrive trans - and it ended up being the electric switch sticking. I had a time lag whenver I shifted, especially when cold. Seems there is no mechancial connection with the shifter to the trans - at least with my 94. An electric switch by the steering column sends a signal to the trans. In most other cases I would of suspected cold oil, half-plugged intake screen, etc. as others have already mentioned.
