A trick that I've used on small engines.....Get number one coming up on compression stroke (check that the rotor in the distributor is pointing to number one)Take out the spark plug then back the piston down to the begining or end of the compression/power stroke depending on which way you have to turn the bolts. Feed lotsa yellow nylon rope into the sparkplug hole, leave the end sticking out, then allow the piston to come up and wedge it against the head. This will prevent your engine from turning over without hurting anything. When you are done back the piston off and carefully remove the rope and reinsert the plug.
