Open port in clutch housing MF1105, Photo

I just recently got this tractor back, MF1105, from being split apart and noticed this open port in what i am guessing is the clutch housing. I just can"t imagine that there should be a wide open space for dirt to go directly in there but before I go back and prove that I don"t know what I"m talking about, I wan"t to check here first. I"m thinking that something was left off obviously but am interested in hearing exactly what. Next post will have a close-up As always, all help is greatly appreciated.
