First off, stringers are used on stairs (..FYI...), and i'm THINKING you're talking about the BEAMS between the posts. IF you are only just walking on the deck with no enormous amounts of loads, i would think that 2 2x8s nailed together are good enough for the beams... HOWEVER, I do NOT think that 2x6's are good enough for the joists no matter if put 16 inches on center or 4 inches on center. My reasoning is that a 2x6 with a load placed in the middle of it will be quite bouncy. You MIGHT want to upgrade the joists to 2x8's on 16 inch centers for the sake of NO BOUNCING. BE sure to nail the joists where you can and use the U-shaped joist hangers...
