You are 100% correct on the soldering. I just did it to fix a pinhole leak on the oil pan on my car. I cleaned it up with a dremel tool, cleaned it off with laquer thinner, barely touched the torch to it with the solder and it was done in two seconds. Bonded very perfectly and made a perfect thick splotch right over the hole. It only takes seconds if the pan is dry.
