I have a 770 which is basically the same tractor as the 790 with a few less HP. I have had mine for 16 years and the only thing I ever had to replace other than filters and fluids was the battery. I once asked a friend of mine who worked at a JD Dealer how they were to work on. He said "I couldn't tell you. Once we sell them, the never come back." In my opinion, I wish a lot of the other products I've paid good money for were as reliable as that little tractor. As for the mower, you could take a brand new out, hit a hidden stump or rock and end up with that same circular pattern in the mower deck. Those mowers either have a shear pin or a slip clutch on them to keep any sudden impacts like that from harming the PTO. I wouldn't worry to much about it damaging the tractor.
