When Deere first came out with the new rectangle Standyne filters - we found out they'd plug real easy with ice. That's not a dirt problem - it an issue where water collects at the bottom, freezes solid, and the machine quits. The old round filters did not plug like that unless they had a LOT of water. The new filters only needed a little to freeze. We had a fleet of rental Deere crawlers, backhoes, etc. So - often in the winter - we DID remove filters, thaw them out, drain them, and re-install. It would of been ridiculous to change with new every time.
But again - that's water - not dirt.
