Make sure you air cleaner is cleaned out.
If you start to spin out, idle back to regain traction. I once saw an old timer that played the throttle like a piano, he got 10 extra feet beyond the rest milking the throttle. He clearly had hours in the seat and knew exactly what the engine could deliever before stalling.
Make sure your engine is up to temperature and gas mixture is right on.
