Maybe the 360 was able to smoke the rear tires when operating as it should. You found it with a failed component somewhere and bypassed around or compensated for it.
Hot rodders tried from 1971 until the mid 1980's to obtain more power from emissions engines with external bolt-ons and tune-ups. Didn't work.
It wasn't until computer controled fuel injection, egr, knock detection & ignition timing working along with a free flowing cat convertor that HP rating began to rise again. Manufactures were able to go back to better flowing componets and more compression.
