Best way to check for spark is pull off a plug wire- hold it- and crank the engine! Spark at the plug is the last place to check before the plug- no spark, then work back from there til you get one. IT WILL NOT KILL YOU- just makes you jump! No spark- that's where you start. Hot coil?- need to check that just when it dies- literally hot- more than warm when you touch it- means bad coil. You need spark at the mag or distributor- between the points. Points need to be set right at the lobe- 4 lobes on your mag or distributor, not in between. But, if it was running and quit, the problem is somewhere between....wires, condenser, coil, etc.
