Ain't that the truth? Amazing how some folks (academics seem particularly prone) "re-discover" things that us common folk never lost. And you're right about old tractor nuts (or nuts that like old tractors, whichever you prefer, I qualify either way) being fix-a-holics. I started carrying a screwdriver around in my pocket when I was 8 or 9, tightening door handles on cabinets and such. Aggravated the heck out of my Dad, taking things apart to see how they worked, and trying (with varying degrees of success) to put them back together. To this day, I'd much rather make something than buy it.
