An old-timer at a local machine shop told me once while I was working on an 8N with adjustable lifters that they never had the "required" spanner for adjusting the tappets; they just drilled a hole in the side of the lifter bore, and inserted a piece of brazing rod to engage the slot in the side of the lifter. [Since they're not hydraulic lifters, it's not like you're gonna drill an oil passage or lose any oil pressure.] The brazing rod kept the tappet body from turning while you adjusted the cap screw in the end of the lifter. I thought he was pulling my leg, but when I heard the same thing from a couple of other machine shops, I tried it...and it worked like a charm.
