I see at least 5 or 6 posts about faulty electronic ignitions on tractors for every 1 about points type. We are not " Luddites"! We are just smart enough to know that everything has a practicle application and some that are not. Antique tractors are NOT a practicle application for electronic ignition. Believe me , they didn't come out with EI on every day driven cars to save the public the hassels of changing and setting points or to give us more horsepower or any other such nonsense that they now advertise to sell these things. The whole electronic ignition system came about so they could get the lean mixtures mandated by ever stiffer emission standards of the Uncle Sam , to fire. Notice I said "system". There is a complete system on our cars of today , from HEI caps,wires,rotors,coils etc that gives the gains we see. The aftermarket units , like Pertronics , are nothing more than the triggering unit to the coil. On an antique tractor with no other upgrades , it won't do any better job than a set of properly set points and is a waste of money. If that makes me a Luddite then so be it. Technology has it's place , and I applaud where it has taken us , but this is just not one of them. My '66 GTO has the latest "hi-tech finish system on it and I still run points in the dist. instead of EI. The paint is worth it and will prove it through the years. The EI is not and has already proved it on this car. Luddite? Hi-tech is great but these people have been fed a bill of goods about the gains they will get from just a triggering unit and it is B_S. Just my opinion , we all have one.
