The range transmission

IH 756. I am having a problem with the range transmission lever. I find it some times hard to move into position.
Some days the rverse shift fitting will not line up with the lever & the neutral lock plate gets stuck. I usually push it back to position to get me going. Obviously this is not what i want to keep doing. Has this happened to any one else. Can some one please shed some light onto this. I would be appreciative if some can tell me how to fix it. Huss
