Yet another tragic consequence of global warming. Seriously bud, it sounds like you've been hijacked. With your machine off line and wireless disabled, try to run a malware detector like AdAware and a good antivirus like AVG (they're both free if your machine will behave long enough to download them). Also if you don't already have it, and it sounds like you don't, get Zone Alarm (free also), a firewall. Keep your defenses updated and run them regularly (AVG runs automatically each night). It may take a few hours to wrest back control of your computing device. Then you can get back to worrying about global warming or something. Good luck.
