Hydraulic Cylinder Disassembly

I have to rebuild the bucket "curl" cylinder on my loader. I have the gland nut loose, but the piston will not come out past what I think is a buildup on the bore from sitting for ten + years. If I force the piston to come past this spot will I hurt anything besides the o-rings and seals? Thanks in advance, doorman
