Metal in filter

I like to take apart my oil filters to see what the filters are picking up. I took apart the hydraulic oil filter on my JD 401 industrial, and ran a cow magnet along all the seams of the filter. I picked up some metal, enough to cover a penney and not be able to see the copper. All the trans gears, breaks, and the pump it self make a certin amount of metal, but how much is too much. Problen is I don't know how long the filter has been in place as I don't know much of the history of this tractor. Stan
