The technical answer is that you have to keep the center of gravity of the tractor inside a line between the front and rear wheels. I'm most comfortable keeping the top of the hood inside that line. Like others have said, don't do anything that you are uncomfortable with.

BTW, a 4:1 slope, if that is rise over run, is too steep.
