That 40hp gearbox rating is MAX input hp.. as in.. don't feed it any more than 40 or you may be able to damage it easier than normal. A rebuilt 600 should spin a 5' mower just fine. A 660 will be the best since it will have live pto and 5 spd tranny. A 650 is next best, with 5 spd tranny.. but you will need an ORC for the pto. 640 is ok .. 4 spd tranny, and again.. needs the ORC for the pto. Soundguy
