I had a 2001 Dakota with the 4.7 Loved the truck, but it was NOT a towing rig. I don't know what the rearend ratio was, but that truck wasn't happy pulling a 18 foot "landscaping" trailer empty, much less with a load on it. It would manage okay (if you didn't mind watching the gas gauge plummet) with a half-dozen sheep, struggle with 100 bales of hay, and flat-out labor with my JD750 and Woods 5' rotary mower.
