Would you now be willing to sell the tractor for 4100? A deposit is to hold the merchandise. Terms of the sale are something else. If he is a banker he understands that and your crabbing is what squelched the deal. If you get 4100 you still get what you agreed to sell the tractor for if you don't return his deposit.
