Diesel Powered Pickups

I'm not trying to strike up controversy here...but it sure seems diesel engines in pickups have ways to go. I know everyone has their horror/success stories, but it seems the bottom line is not good. Even when these trucks are driven "over the road," it seems there are frequently major ($$$) reliability issues. I am keeping my ear to the ground as I would like to buy a used dually before long, but the diesels (all types/models) are scaring me. Am I missing something? Glenn F.
