5KW is the absolute minimum. So many people purchase a 1500,2250 or 3500 and think they can run one load at a time. The little generators often can not supply enough volts and amps to start a refrigerant compressor, sump pump or well pump.
Generac is American made and good value for the $$$. Parts are easy to come by at Jacksmallengines or smallenginewarehouse.
Of course a proper transfer switch is required if powering up the entire service.
