Start him slow and have him identify the gun as 'harmless"..leave it out where he can see it and let him deal with it for a few weeks. If he's shy to the bang, then as he's doing something he enjoys, like eating..start with some blanks in a starter pistol of or something that'll make a bang. Not loud at first but progress up to louder and louder as he gets more comfortable with it. Work him in slow and the point is to have identify the gun with fun.
