They are interchangeable. The original ammeter like you described measures inductive amps through the wire by using magnetic fields generated by the amperes passing through the wire. The replacement style works on the same principal, but it works on the inside of the gauge, instead of reading the magnetic fields through the back of the gauge. Just be sure to hook it up correctly, or it will read backwards. I think the + side hooks to the battery, and the - terminal hooks to the switch, but I could be wrong. It depends on wether your tractor is positive or negative ground.
