Since so many responded to the first post about this, I thought I would let you in on what's going on. The deputy was right, well mostly right. The GPS tracking devise involved was installed as a monitor when the trailer was used commercialy, and the imformation generated by it was available to anyone that could access the account. Lojak Systems, and their competitors, who sell these as anti-theft units will only activate the unit when the request comes from a bona fide law enforcement agency AND a NCIC case file number has been assigned. They will share this information ONLY with law enforcement. The unit here in this instance, if used to track a theif, became the same thing as a "unauthorised wire tap", according to the local DA's office. The trailer is now back home. However the details on just how that happened are a mite foggy.
