We had an intermitant problem with a 2005
powerstroke in an e350 van and it would run like crap
and pour smoke then stop smokeing and run fine. It
was a wire chafe on the egr valve circuit. It would
cause the egr valve to divert exhaust into the intake
when it shouldn't gagging the engine on its own
exhaust. It didn't get enough oxygen to burn the fuel
hence the clouds of smoke. It was nearly new so it was
"fixed" twice by Ford. We were told Ford had had a lot
of that with the PS and had a bulletin out on it.
