jim...everything you say is true. nozzel to work spacing and angle of nozzel can all help reduce spatter. here's what one welder told me when i was asking for tips when i first bought my mig. he said "if it sounds just like frying bacon in a pan you're doing it right". it's kind of a simple tip but it's really kind of true. if it's a steady "sizzle" sound when i'm welding, i'm usually making my nicest welds. if i'm skipping and popping alot i have more spatter and rougher looking welds. the spatter sheild and nozzle spray do help alot when cleaning up.
