Your ancestors probably sold their wagons to buy food, the horses were stolen by the cattle rustlers, and the railroads came and took all the good land, and left the bad stuff for them!
Here in W. Pennsylvania, its so cold the thermometers are so low we can't read them, the school busses won't start, because of the new low sulphur fuel, and if they do start, they only run a mile or so, and konk out!
We're hunkerin' down in the house. Got 2 furnaces running, hopefully it will warm up soon!
