Coyotes usually only kill for food and will usually only kill what they can eat. On the other hand, "domestic coyotes" will pack up and kill for fun. We had 300-400 sheep and never lost many to coyotes, but when some neighbor"s sweet little Fluffy and his 2 or 3 pals or some dumped strays got into the sheep around 6am, it was a slaughter. Needless to say, there was all out war on any and all canines running loose.
