When I was a kid I rebuilt an old Ford. Being on a tight budget I reused the old radiator hoses, which looked good. However, when she warmed up she would suck the top hose, which turned out to be a little spongy, partially closed and overheat. I replaced the top hose and the problem went away.

On a similar subject, I once chased an electrical charging problem by replacing the alternator, battery and cables to no avail before an old timer suggested I replace the fan belt, which looked just fine. I did and it fixed it. Reason: the old belt would stretch out when it got warm and allow it to slip just enough not to fully drive the alternator.
So, beware the old rubber components.
