Actually the oil pressure relay is also there to shut down the engine when the oil pressure drops too low (like a broken oil pump drive). Supposedly helps to save a minor repair (scored bearings) from a major (like new long block). My sister's diesel didn't have one. When the dealer's mechanic replaced the radiator he forgot to hook up the oil cooler line, took about 3 miles to pump the oil onto the road and destroy the motor. It's quite possilbe to wreck a vehicle hard enough to split the fuel lines without shutting off the engine immediately. Particualrly if there is an electric fuel pump and the line you split is the return line.
