Leaking gas tanks aren't that uncommon in an older jeep. I had a 1985 CJ7 back in the early 90's that I had to replace the fuel tank in. It rusted from the grunge that gets packed between the fuel tank skid plate/support and the tank bottom. Just a hairline crack... and I had fuel all over the driveway. Atleast I wasn't driving mine at the time. My 99 wrangler has a tank mounted in similar fashion but I've never checked to see what it's made of.
