Actually, the two trees are very different. The Ponderosa Pine is widespread across the Western US. I'm familiar with them in the Inland NW, they tend to grow very well-spaced on ridge tops.

Jack Pine, in my area, is slang for a "worthless" small pine that has no commercial or personal value (i.e. fence material, firewood, etc.).
